How ADHD Is Evaluated

There is no single test that diagnoses ADHD. A qualified provider may consider several sources of information, including:

• clinical and developmental history
• current symptoms and how they affect daily life
• behavior across settings such as home, school, or work
• standardized questionnaires or rating scales
• information from parents, partners, teachers, or others when appropriate
• medical, psychological, sleep, or learning factors that could affect attention
• performance-based testing such as the TOVA

The TOVA measures performance during a sustained visual or auditory attention task. It records:

Results are compared with applicable normative samples and presented in reports for interpretation by a qualified clinician. What TOVA Testing May Add

TOVA results may help a clinician:

• obtain objective performance data regarding attention and inhibitory control
• identify differences in performance across portions of a sustained task
• compare visual and auditory attention performance when both tests are administered
• consider test performance alongside reported symptoms, history, and clinical observations
• evaluate changes over time or under different treatment conditions when repeat testing is clinically appropriate

Two people with similar reported ADHD symptoms may perform differently on measures of consistency, speed, sustained attention, and inhibitory control. The TOVA can help add that individualized performance information to the broader clinical picture.

What the TOVA Cannot Tell You

The TOVA does not determine by itself whether someone has ADHD, explain the cause of an attention difficulty, or replace a comprehensive clinical evaluation.

Results that differ from normative expectations are not automatically proof of ADHD, and results within expected ranges do not necessarily rule it out. The reports should be interpreted by a qualified professional together with the person’s history, symptoms, functioning, and other relevant information. Standalone TOVA Testing

Some clinicians use the TOVA in their own practices, while others ask clients to obtain testing from an independent provider.
