A TOVA retest is not something everyone needs on a routine schedule. It can be useful, however, when there has been a meaningful change since your previous test or when your healthcare provider wants updated objective information for comparison.

Because TOVA measures aspects of attention and response control, repeat testing can sometimes help show whether performance has changed over time.

COMMON REASONS FOR RETESTING

Medication changes
A psychiatrist, PMHNP, or other prescribing clinician may want updated TOVA results after starting, stopping, or changing medication.

Treatment follow-up
Retesting may help provide objective comparison data after a period of treatment or another intervention.

Changes in attention or functioning
If you or your clinician have noticed a meaningful change in concentration, impulsivity, work or school functioning, or other attention-related concerns, updated testing may be useful.

A new clinical evaluation
If some time has passed since your original TOVA and you are undergoing a new ADHD or other clinical evaluation, your provider may want current results rather than relying on older testing.

Comparing with a prior baseline
One of the advantages of repeat testing is the ability to compare new results with your previous TOVA performance.

Unusual circumstances during the original test
Poor sleep, illness, unusual caffeine or nicotine intake, significant anxiety, medication changes, or other circumstances can sometimes affect testing conditions. In some situations, a clinician may recommend repeating the test under more typical conditions.

DO I NEED TO RETEST

There is no standard interval at which everyone should repeat TOVA testing.

If you are currently working with a psychiatrist, PMHNP, therapist, or other healthcare professional, you may want to ask whether updated TOVA results would be useful in your care.

RETURNING-CLIENT RETEST FEE

Our regular fee for first-time Visual and Auditory TOVA testing is $250.

Returning clients can repeat both tests for $175.

From time to time, we may also offer limited-time reduced rates when additional testing appointments are available.

WHAT REPEAT TESTING INCLUDES

A retest appointment includes:

• Visual TOVA
• Auditory TOVA
• a short break between tests
• updated TOVA reports
• comparison with prior testing when appropriate
• testing observations and summary materials to share with your healthcare provider

Appointments generally take about 70 minutes and are completed in person at our South Pasadena location.
