Preparing for the TOVA Test

While there isn’t any studying or physical training involved, there are things you need to do – and avoid doing – immediately before taking the TOVA Test.

Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before your TOVA Test appointment. Avoid excessive drinking or using sleeping aids which may leave you feeling groggy the next day.

You’re not supposed to consume stimulants (e.g. coffee, black tea, caffeinated beverages, vapes) or depressants (e.g. antihistamines, alcohol) prior to the test, so make sure you prevent yourself from doing it out of habit the morning of your TOVA Test appointment.

If you’re taking medications, please prepare a list of the medications, dosage, and the last time you took them before taking the TOVA Test. The test administrator or observer will want to collect and record that information with your test results, so a clinician can factor your medications into their interpretation of the TOVA test reports.

If the drive or commute to the TOVA testing location will tire you out or make you exceedingly drowsy, consider getting a ride so you can arrive refreshed.

This will vary with the TOVA Test provider or facility, but they may need to conclude your appointment at a certain time because the room may be needed for another appointment, the scheduled observer must leave by a certain time, or other reasons. If you arrive late and there is insufficient time to complete your testing, they may decline to conduct your TOVA Testing, and you may be charged a late cancellation fee.

Without getting into the merits or validity of masking, if you’re a masker, please remember that there will be (or there should be) an observer with you in the test room. So bring your mask if you normally wear one when confined indoors with someone, If you’re especially concerned, you can ask in advance if the observer will wear a mask by default or at your request.
